New Roof and Old Shoes

Some more progress is now being made with the restoration of our Lodge, in that joiners have been in to start work on a new roof.

While the area was being cleared for the joiners to start, a quite remarkable discovery was made.

Hidden up in the area under the old roof beams was a pair of tiny child's shoes.

These shoes would seem to date from the Victorian era. They are hob nailed, with the heels well worn down. So a succession of small children must have worn these shoes, and must have worn them hard too.

The Lodge was built by the Earl of Fife in 1820. In those days it consisted of 2 rooms only. Now we find it hard to imagine how a large family could have lived in such a small space, with such minimal facilities.

Could these shoes have been sitting hidden up in the roof of our Lodge for some 150 years? Or so?

They would now seem to be worthy of a place in some museum display...
